My name is Dennis Whitford as well as having a “spirit name” Two Thunder Caller given to me by an Elder from the Blackfoot Confederacy. My wife Jean and I have been St. James Parishioners for two years after being with Our Lady of Peace Church (OLOP) in Peace River Alberta, for seventeen years. I was Council chairperson at OLOP for approximately five years, a member of the Archdiocese of Grouard McLennan Diocesan Council for about ten years, serving as the Indigenous Committee representative. I continue to participate on the Canadian Catholic Indigenous Council, having been a member also for about ten years. My wife and I follow the pow-wow trail in the summer now balanced with a mix of community based, generally seniors’ social activities and events. A favorite aspect of our church life is the sense of fellowship and belonging derived from being a member of a faith-based organization. My hope is the church will continue to vigorously pursue reconciliation leading to becoming a valued and spiritually fulfilling place for Indigenous people.
